The rules

How to play peg solitaire

The board is a cross of 33 holes. At the start, every hole holds a peg except the one in the middle. A legal move needs three holes in a straight line — horizontally or vertically, never diagonally:

  1. A peg to move.
  2. An adjacent peg to jump over.
  3. An empty hole directly beyond it.

The peg hops into the empty hole and the peg it jumped is removed from the board. Each jump therefore takes exactly one peg off, so a game that starts with 32 pegs takes 31 jumps to reach a single peg. You win by finishing with that last peg in the centre hole.

Work inward

Pegs stranded on the arms of the cross are the ones that get left behind. Moves that pull pegs toward the middle keep your options open.

Avoid lone pegs

A peg with no neighbour can never move and can never be jumped. Every isolated peg you create is a peg you cannot remove.

Count in threes

Experienced players clear the board in packages of three pegs that return to their own corner — the classic block-and-sweep pattern.

If you get stuck

A worked solution

Every board on this site is solvable, but most sequences of legal jumps are not. If you dead end with pegs marooned on opposite arms, that is the puzzle working as designed — undo and try a different order.

If you would rather see it done, we publish a complete, verified 31-jump solution you can step through one move at a time.

Questions

Peg solitaire FAQ

What is peg solitaire?

A single-player puzzle on a cross-shaped board of 33 holes. Jump one peg over another into an empty hole, remove the peg you jumped, and keep going until no move remains. It is also sold as Solo Noble, Brainvita, and the triangular Cracker Barrel peg game.

How many moves does it take to solve?

Exactly 31. The board starts with 32 pegs and every jump removes precisely one, so reaching a single peg always takes 31 jumps — no more, no fewer.

Is peg solitaire always solvable?

The standard opening is, and it can be finished in the centre hole. An individual game is not: most jump orders strand pegs. Planning two or three moves ahead is the whole game.

Do I need to download anything?

No. This board runs in your browser, free, with no account. If you want it offline on a phone or tablet, Monolume is the native iPhone and iPad version.
